Agriculture is an economically strong sector in Limburg. Innovative entrepreneurs in the agrifood sector will now gain access to Chemelot Ventures. This fund provides funding to startups and fast-growing entrepreneurs in and around the Limburg Brightlands campuses. The fund will now also explicitly include agrifood in its focus.
The expansion is in the form of a separate entity, Brightlands Agrifood Ventures, which will be managed by Chemelot Ventures. The latter was founded in 2014 by the Province of Limburg, DSM, LIOF and Rabobank for entrepreneurs active in chemicals & materials (Brightlands Chemelot Campus) and health (Brightlands Health Campus Maastricht). Now that the Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo has been launched, the agrifood sector has also been added.
Brightlands Agrifood Ventures will initially total € 17 million, funded by Rabobank Venlo (€ 5 million), Limburg Province (€ 5 million) and LIOF (€ 1 million). The fund management has also contributed. Moreover, the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemende Nederland (RVO) has pledged an amount of € 6 million under the so-called Seedcapital scheme.
Today the parties involved have signed for the expansion of the fund at the Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo. This expansion also stipulates that the fund will be open to other investors in the coming year.
Twan Beurskens Deputy for Economic Affairs and Knowledge Infrastructure for the Province of Limburg: “Due to the growth of the Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo it was foreseeable that innovative SMEs would also need venture capital. That’s why the province is also investing in the expansion of this fund.”
Chemelot Ventures expects the agrifood fund to invest in eight to ten technology startups in agrifood that have a close link with the Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo. The fund focuses on innovations in crop protection and optimization, seed improvement, precision agriculture, valorization of agricultural and horticultural waste and healthy nutrition.

Furthermore, a great deal of valuable knowledge can be exchanged with Rabobank’s investment branch, Rabo Private Equity, which also invests in other Dutch and international agrifood-related funds.”
Chemelot Ventures is the successor fund to Limburg Ventures, founded in 2004, which totaled approximately € 15 million and has made more than 20 investments. Chemelot Ventures was founded in 2014 with a total committed capital of € 40 million and has since made 12 investments. With the expansion into agrifood (€ 17 million), the fund now serves entrepreneurs on or around the Brightlands campuses in Geleen (Brightlands Chemelot Campus), Maastricht (Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus) and Venlo (Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo). www.chemelotventures.wp3.go2people.nl/

Agrifood krijgt toegang tot Brightlands-fonds
De landbouw is een economisch sterke sector in Limburg. Vernieuwende ondernemers in de agrifood-sector krijgen toegang tot Chemelot Ventures. Dat fonds verschaft kapitaal aan startende en snelgroeiende ondernemers op en rond de Limburgse Brightlands campussen. Het fonds gaat zich nu ook nadrukkelijk richten op agrifood.
De uitbreiding krijgt de vorm van een aparte entiteit, Brightlands Agrifood Ventures, die wordt beheerd door Chemelot Ventures. Dit fonds is in 2014 opgericht door de Provincie Limburg, DSM, LIOF en de Rabobank voor ondernemers in chemie en materialen (Brightlands Chemelot Campus) en gezondheid (Brightlands Health Campus Maastricht). Nu de Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo van start is gegaan wordt ook de agrifood-sector aangesloten.
Brightlands Agrifood Ventures heeft bij de oprichting een omvang van ruim € 17 miljoen, gevoed door de Rabobank Venlo (€ 5 miljoen), de Provincie Limburg (€ 5 miljoen) en LIOF (€ 1 miljoen). Het fondsmanagement draagt zelf ook bij. Verder heeft de Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO) een bedrag van € 6 miljoen toegezegd in het kader van de zogeheten Seedcapitalregeling.
Vandaag hebben de betrokken partijen op de Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo hun handtekening gezet onder de uitbreiding van het fonds. Bij die uitbreiding is tevens bepaald dat het fonds het komend jaar open zal staan voor het toetreden van andere investeerders.
Limburgs Gedeputeerde Twan Beurskens van Economie en Kennisinfrastructuur: “Door de groei van de Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo was te voorzien dat ook het innovatieve midden- en kleinbedrijf behoefte heeft aan risicokapitaal. Daarom investeert ook de Provincie in de uitbreiding van dit fonds.”
Chemelot Ventures verwacht dat het agrifood-fonds investeert in acht tot tien technologische startups in de agrifood, die een sterke link hebben met de Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo. Het fonds concentreert zich onder andere op innovaties op het gebied van gewasbescherming en –optimalisatie, zaadverbetering, precisielandbouw, het waardevol maken van afval uit de land- en tuinbouw en gezonde voeding.

Chemelot Ventures is de opvolger van het in 2004 opgerichte Limburg Ventures dat een omvang had van circa € 15 miljoen en ruim 20 investeringen heeft gerealiseerd. Chemelot Ventures is opgericht in 2014 met een kapitaal van € 40 miljoen en heeft sindsdien 12 investeringen gerealiseerd.
